Department Urges Safety in Work Zones Despite Suspension of Work

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation will suspend all interstate construction work this Easter weekend in anticipation of increased holiday travel.

TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely informed TDOT crews and contractors to stop all road construction work which requires lane closures beginning on Thursday, April 9 at 6:00 p.m. and ending at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, April 13.  This will provide maximum roadway capacity to motorists expected to travel across the state this holiday weekend.

“Many families get together during the Easter holiday, and we want to minimize travel interruptions during this important time,” said Nicely, “Suspending lane closures during this time period will help keep traffic flowing.”

Motorists will still encounter some long term lane closures on construction projects that will remain in place. Drivers should obey all posted speed limits, particularly in construction zones, even when workers are not present.  The slower speeds are necessary due to the temporary layout of the roadway in construction zones and will be strictly enforced.

Travelers are encouraged to dial 511 from any land line or cellular phone to access valuable information about travel conditions anytime, or log on to www.TN511.com.
