NASHVILLE –  Alan Smith, assistant commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions’ Consumer Resources Division, has been elected vice president of the Tennessee Jump$tart Coalition.

Tennessee Jump$tart is a nonprofit organization comprised of approximately 50 individuals and organizations representing business, government and education working to improve personal financial literacy among Tennessee's youth.

“We are excited for Alan to serve in this leadership role with Jump$tart,” said Commissioner Greg Gonzales. “Jump$tart is a strong advocate in spreading financial literacy across the state and this position gives Alan an opportunity to share his ideas and strategies with one of Tennessee’s most positive financial literacy teams.”

Smith has been a Jump$tart board-member representative for the department since 2004.  During his five years with Jump$tart, Smith has been a presenter at the annual Jump$tart Personal Financial Education Teachers Conference, served as the chairperson of the Jump$tart Teacher of the Year Awards Committee and recently joined Jump$tart’s State Research Committee that will be gauging the effectiveness of personal financial education in the high school classroom.

As vice president, Smith will assist the organization with speaking engagements, presentations and new projects. This will be a busy year for Jump$tart, as Tennessee continues to train education professionals to teach personal financial education classes that recently became a graduation requirement for all high school students, beginning with the 2009 freshmen class.

“It is an honor to serve as vice president with the members of this group,” said Smith.
“This year we look forward to setting and accomplishing important goals and I am excited to play a part in raising financial literacy awareness throughout Tennessee.”
