Company Earns First Sharp Award

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley announced that American Colloid Company in Chattanooga was chosen to receive the SHARP (Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program) award.

"American Colloid Company shows a continued dedication to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace," said Commissioner Neeley, who presented the SHARP award to the company today at the company’s facility located at 3406 Alton Park Blvd., Chattanooga. “We are pleased to honor this fine company for their notable safety record.”

The SHARP award, designed for employers with fewer than 250 workers in high-hazard industrial classifications, is one of the state’s highest honors for workplace safety and health. The main incentive for participation in the SHARP award program is the desire by employers to promote a safe and healthy workplace. The program also allows employers to be removed from programmed compliance inspection lists for a period of 12 months.

American Colloid Company was established in 1927, and currently the company employs six people. ACC is a bentonite mining company with the largest contributing segment being the metal casting products group. The Chattanooga facility is part of the metal casting products group that custom blends foundry sand additives which act as a foundry mold binder. This is the first SHARP award the company has received.
