Repair Projects Will Reduce I-40 to One Lane in Two Locations

NASHVILLE – Two separate bridge repair projects in the Memphis area will require TDOT contract crews to reduce I-40 to one lane in two separate locations this weekend.

In Fayette County, crews will reduce Interstate 40 to one lane in both directions as work to repair five bridges continues.  I-40 east and westbound between mile marker 29.5 and 33.5 will be reduced to one lane from Friday, October 23, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. until Monday, October 26 at 6:00 a.m.

Crews are working to repair the bridge deck surfaces on five bridges on I-40 east of Memphis between mile marker 29.5 and 33.5. All work is dependent on favorable weather conditions. Troopers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol will be on site in the work zone to provide traffic control as the work is being completed.

In Memphis, crews will reduce I-40 westbound on the Hernando Desoto Bridge over the Mississippi River to one lane throughout the weekend as work to seismically retrofit the bridge continues. Beginning Friday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m., I-40 westbound on the Hernando Desoto Bridge will be reduced to one lane until Monday, October 26 at 6:00 a.m. The seismic retrofit project intends to make the Hernando Desoto Bridge able to withstand, with little or no damage, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. The work is weather dependent.
