Advisory: I-55 Northbound Exit to Mallory Avenue in Memphis to Close January 11

Monday, January 05, 2009 | 09:37am
NASHVILLE - Tennessee Department of Transportation crews will close I-55 northbound Exit 9 at Mallory Lane beginning Sunday, January 11. The exit will remain closed for at least 12 months. I-55 northbound motorists who wish to access the Mallory Avenue area should instead use Exit 7 to Third Street where detours will be posted to assist drivers. A left turn signal has also been installed at the intersection of Third Street and Mallory Avenue to help drivers and improve safety.

Also beginning January 11, the northbound lanes of I-55 will be shifted to the west onto the newly widened portion of the interstate located on the southbound side of the roadway. The shift is needed in order to reconstruct the bridges over Riverport Road, a railroad spur line to the Valero Refinery, and Mallory Avenue.

The work is part of the $43.4 million Mallory Avenue interchange improvement project. The project, which began in May 2008, includes the reconstruction of the Mallory Avenue interchange, reconstruction of six bridges and construction of 20 retaining walls. The project is estimated to be completed in late 2010.
