NASHVILLE --- Tennessee’s 2009 youth waterfowl hunt will be held Jan. 31-Feb. 1, with the Reelfoot Lake Zone set for the following weekend, Feb. 7-8, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has announced. The Reelfoot Lake zone is closed during the statewide segment.

This hunt is for youth ages 6-15 and all young hunters must be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years old.  Geese, coots, gallinules, moorhens, and ducks, including pintails, may be taken by youths during the youth waterfowl hunt.  Bag limit for the youth waterfowl is the same as the statewide season.  The adults accompanying the young hunter may not hunt ducks but may participate in other open seasons.

The TWRA is encouraging hunters to take advantage of this opportunity to introduce a new generation to the joys and heritage of waterfowl hunting. This is a great chance to let youngsters go out and enjoy the experience of waterfowl hunting.

Hunters 12 and under do not need a hunting license to hunt in Tennessee. Hunters 15 and younger do not need a Federal Migratory Bird Stamp (Duck Stamp). Youngsters 13-15 need a Junior Hunt/Trap/Fish license (Type 002). In addition, hunters 10 and older, who were born after Jan. 1, 1969, must possess proof that they have successfully completed a hunter education course, unless they have the Apprentice License (Type 012). For complete details on the requirements of the Apprentice License (Type 012) check the 2008 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide or go the TWRA Web site, www.tnwildlife.org
