NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Education today announced students John Angle of Franklin and Richard Herron of Dresden will be the 2009 delegates to the United State Senate Youth Program held in March.

The two high school students will attend the program March 7-14 in Washington, D.C. where they will engage in a week-long study of the federal government and the people who lead it. The overall mission of the program is to help instill within each class of USSYP student delegates more profound knowledge of the American political process and a lifelong commitment to public service.

“We are proud to have students with such great academic success in our state and more importantly, we are excited to know that these two gentlemen will be representing our state in Washing, D.C.,” Education Commissioner Timothy Webb said.

In addition to the week-long program, each of the 104 delegates (two from each state) will be granted a $5,000 college scholarship through The Hearst Foundations with encouragement to continue coursework in government, history and public affairs.

While in Washington, the student delegates will attend meetings and briefings with Senate leadership, other Senators and Congressional staff, the President, a Justice of the Supreme Court, leaders of the cabinet agencies, an Ambassador to the United States and top members of the national media.

John Angle attends Franklin High School where he currently serves as Secretary and Treasurer of the Student Council, President of Youth in Government and Vice President of the TN Model UN.

Richard Herron attends Dresden High School where he is Vice President of the senior class. He is a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, Eagle Scout, captain of the school cross-country team and a presenter for The Climate Project.
