Not Too Early To Think About Doves

With this year’s dove season just a couple of months away, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency reminds sportsmen that now is a good time to start scouting out where the doves are located.

“Finding good crop fields with doves is a starting point for setting yourself up for some good dove hunting,” said Roger Applegate, TWRA Small Game Coordinator. “Look for large numbers of doves lined up on power lines near fields or watch ponds for dove flights in early morning or late afternoon. Mark your locations on a map and keep an eye on these areas the rest of the summer.”

Areas that continue to hold good dove numbers by mid-August will be worth planning on for the season. Hunters are urged to check locally to find landowners of properties that have gained their interest.

Also, TWRA leased dove fields, and managed dove fields on Wildlife Management Areas, will be posted on the TWRA Web site (www.tnwildlife.org) by mid-August.

The 2008 dove season opens on Labor Day (Sept. 1).
