Nashville, Tenn. - Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that the state will provide the town of Jasper with an enhancement grant in the amount of $128,260 to assist with the development of a Trail Lighting Project. TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely joined state and local leaders to present them with the grant award at an event at the Jasper Town Hall.

The project is located in the town of Jasper in Marion County, and will enable the town to install pedestrian lighting along 2,200 linear feet of trail.

“Multiple options for transportation and recreation increase a city’s livability,” said Bredesen. “The pedestrian walkway in Jasper is a central connector for school children and citizens to access the town’s recreational complexes from their homes. I am happy to award this grant for lighting that will help make the trail more safe and usable at all hours.”

“The trail system in Jasper is used by all residents of Marion County,” said Representative Bill Harmon. ”I am very pleased to have been involved in bringing this grant to Jasper.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through the Enhancement Grant Program, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million in transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said Nicely.

The federal grant program was established by Congress in the early 1990s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.

Under a previous enhancement grant, the town secured funding for the multipurpose trail that connects Marion County High School, Jasper Elementary School, the Marion County Board of Education Building, Senior Housing, and town recreational complexes. This multipurpose trail provides residents with a paved trail for walking and biking, allowing access to a majority of Jasper. The installation of pedestrian lighting along the trail will enhance the area and add to the safety of the trail users.
