Davidson County Woman Charged with TennCare, Food Stamp Fraud

NASHVILLE –  A Davidson County woman has been charged with TennCare fraud and food stamp fraud.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) today announced the arrest of Jasmine Jackson, 29, of Nashville.  Jackson’s arrest was assisted by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. 

Jackson is charged with not reporting her income to state officials in order to receive TennCare health care benefits, as well as food stamps. Jackson was indicted for one count of TennCare fraud, one count of theft of services, and one count of fraudulent receipt of food assistance. 

“The fraudulent misuse of TennCare benefits is a serious issue that we are aggressively pursuing across the state,” Inspector General Deborah Y. Faulkner said.  “People who are employed should report their income to the state, and failing to do so in order to receive taxpayer-funded benefits is simply not tolerated in Tennessee.”

If convicted, Jackson could serve up to six years in prison. District Attorney General Victor S. Johnson, III will be prosecuting.

The OIG, a law enforcement agency separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has worked cases leading to the arrest of over 820 individuals for TennCare fraud, with nearly $1 million paid in restitution to TennCare, and total estimated cost avoidance in TennCare of over $122 million, according to latest figures. 

Through the OIG Cash for Tips Program established by the Legislature, Tennesseans can get cash rewards for TennCare fraud tips that lead to convictions.
