TDOT Launches New “Smart Commute” Web Site

Nashville, TN - The Tennessee Department of Transportation today launched the “Tennessee Smart Commute” Web site, www.tennessee.gov/tdot/smartcommute, to help commuters in the volunteer state identify alternative ways of traveling to and from work each day.  The Smart Commute website is a clearinghouse of information on commuting options across the state.

“With fuel costs and congestion on the rise, it’s important for Tennesseans to know their commuting options,” said Governor Phil Bredesen.  “This Web site gives commuters the information they need to try something different, be it car pooling, biking or riding the bus to their destination.”

The Tennessee Smart Commute Web site provides information on a variety of commuting options including walking, biking, passenger rail, public transit, and ridesharing.  Visitors can even chat with others looking for someone to share a ride to work.

“While these services have been available for some time, information on each of them has not previously been housed on one site,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely.  “The Tennessee Smart Commute Web site will provide easy access to a variety of commuting options.  In addition we encourage Tennesseans to talk back and send us other commuting resources not listed on the site.”

TDOT will continue to add links for additional commuting options as they become available.  In addition, TDOT welcomes commuter comments and suggestions.

“Tennessee’s 25-Year Transportation Plan identified ‘choices’ as a main component of the strategic investments in transportation over the next few years,” said Ed Cole, TDOT Chief of Environment and Planning.  “This Web site helps educate Tennesseans on the many choices available to commuters.”
