Nashville, Tenn. - Governor Phil Bredesen joined state and local leaders today to award Morgan County with an enhancement grant in the amount of $263,406 to assist with the development of the Morgan County Cumberland Trail Pedestrian Connector Project.

This project will link both the Cumberland Trail and the City of Wartburg through the construction of a 3,126 linear foot concrete sidewalk.  The sideway will begin on Main Street and connect to a pedestrian bridge across Highway 29.

“I’m pleased the state can help Morgan County with the development of the Morgan County Cumberland Trail Pedestrian Connector Project,” said Bredesen.  “These kinds of projects contribute not only to community development, but also to increasing public safety and health, and I’m pleased the state can provide resources to assist with developing the connector.”

“Creating additional transportation options is important for the development of a county’s infrastructure,” said Senator Tommy Kilby.  “I’m glad the state could assist with Morgan County’s well thought-out enhancement plan.”

“This project will promote economic development and good health as people get outside to walk more and ride their bicycles,” Representative John Mark Windle.  “Walking provides a healthy alternative to driving and adds to the vitality of a community.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through the Enhancement Grant Program, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million in transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely.

The federal grant program was established by Congress in the early 1990s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.

This project also includes lighting and ADA accessibility.  Once complete, this project will provide pedestrians with a safe way to walk through this area.
