Map Includes Important Information about 14-Month I-40 Closure

Nashville, Tenn. – The Official 2008 Tennessee Transportation Map is now available to assist travelers in their planning efforts.  This year’s state map includes several new elements, including a listing of Tennessee’s Biofuel Green Island Corridors, information about emergency reference markers, and the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s SmartFIX40 accelerated construction project.

“In May 2008, a short section of Interstate 40 through downtown Knoxville will be closed for approximately 14 months,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely.  “By including the closure information on the state map, we can help educate travelers about the closure and help them plan ahead.”

The complete closure of I-40 between James White Parkway (exit 388) and Hall of Fame Drive (exit 389) is expected to save more than two-years in construction time.

“By closing the interstate, the contractors are able to work around the clock and unimpeded by traffic,” Nicely added.  “This reduces the amount of time it takes to construct the project which saves Knoxville motorists time and money spent sitting in slower construction zone traffic.”

The state map is available on the TDOT web site at www.tn.gov/tdot/maps.htm.

“The map is a service TDOT is pleased to provide to the public each year,” said Judy Steele, Director of TDOT’s Community Relations Division. “The map is free and available at welcome centers and rest areas across the state.”

Pre-printed maps are also available and can be ordered from TDOT online at www.tn.gov/tdot/MapOrder/maporder.htm or by mailing a request to:
