Workshop Partners Education and Youth Service Providers

Nashville, TN – The federal and state departments of education are co-hosting a December workshop for organizations seeking to provide educational assistance to economically disadvantaged students in Tennessee. The workshop will cover how to become an approved supplemental education services provider and receive federal funds to tutor students in math and language arts. Potential providers will also have the opportunity to network with existing providers.

 

“This workshop is an opportunity to expand the academic support available for students who need additional help,” said Dr. Julie McCargar, Executive Director of Federal Programs for the Tennessee Department of Education. “Communities across the state are finding ways to make partnerships like these benefit students.”

 

‘Supplemental educational services’ refers to academic instruction beyond the regular school day designed to increase the academic achievement of students at low-performing schools. Eligible providers may include faith-based and community organizations; non-profit or for-profit entities; local education agencies or public schools; public charter schools; private schools; and public or private institutions of higher education.

 

The workshop will also include information on:

-         No Child Left Behind

-         Charter Schools

-         21st Century Community Learning Centers

-         nutrition programs

-         school choice programs

-         grant writing and administration

-         capacity building

-         Department of Health and Human Services programs for at-risk youth
