Meeting Set to Examine Tennessee Nominations to National Register of Historic Places

MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC INVITED TO ATTEND NASHVILLE MEETING ON JANUARY 24, 2007Nashville, Tenn. - The State Review Board will meet on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 to examine Tennessee’s newest proposed nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.

The meeting will be held at Clover Bottom Mansion at 2941 Lebanon Road in Nashville. It will begin at 9:00 a.m. CDT. The Board will vote on 15 nominations from across the state. Those nominations that are found to meet the criteria will be sent for final approval to the National Register of Historic Places in the Department of the Interior.

The nominations are:

Anderson County: Post Oak Springs Christian Church
Claiborne County: Claiborne County Jail
Davidson County: Dr. Richard and Mrs. Margaret Martin House; McGavock-Gatewood-Webb House
Dickson County: Promise Land School
Gibson County: Oakland Cemetery
Hamblen County: Leeper Farm
Macon County: Belview School
Madison County: Anderson Presbyterian Church
Polk County: Knoxville Southern Railroad Historic District
Sevier County: Pi Beta Phi Settlement School Dormitories and Dwellings Historic District
Shelby County: Southern Railway Industrial Historic District; Squire’s Rest
Sullivan County: George Washington School
Williamson County: Smithson-McCall Farm

The Board also plans to re-assess two properties that are on the National Register of Historic Places but have changed since they were designated. The Meigs County High School Gymnasium has been demolished and the Clarksville Foundry and Machine Works in Montgomery County is partially demolished.

The State Review Board is composed of 13 people with backgrounds in American history, architecture, archaeology or related fields. It also includes members representing the public. The National Register program was authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966.
