Reminder: Revenue Now Handling Title And Registration

AGENCY’S RE-DESIGNED WEB SITE REFLECTS NEW RESPONSIBILITIES

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Department of Revenue reminds citizens that all functions relating to the Division of Title and Registration in the Tennessee Department of Safety were transferred to the Department of Revenue on July 1. As part of this transfer of responsibility, the Department of Revenue also unveiled a re-designed Web site, www.Tennessee.gov/revenue, updated with its new customers in mind. The department encourages customers to visit the Web site for information related to title and registration.

This transition of functions resulted from Governor Phil Bredesen’s Executive Order No. 36. Signed on April 19, the order called for the transfer to be effective July 1, 2006, with all functions relating to the Division of Title and Registration to be administered by the Commissioner of Revenue from that date forward.

“We are working earnestly to enhance customer-service, processing and deposit functions, as well as call-center operations,” said Revenue Commissioner Loren L. Chumley. “Ultimately, we hope to maximize efficiency of these functions to better serve our customers.”

The Department of Revenue is responsible for the administration of state tax laws and motor vehicle title and registration laws established by the legislature and the collection of taxes and fees associated with those laws. The Department of Revenue collects approximately 92 percent of total state tax revenue. During the 2005-2006 fiscal year, the department collected $10.3 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, $1.8 billion of local sales tax was collected by the department for local governments during the 2005-2006 fiscal year. Besides collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance.
