TDOT Plans Interstate Closure to Perform Bridge Repairs

Wednesday, September 20, 2006 | 07:00pm

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced today it will be closing a portion of Interstate 40 for several weekends through the end of the year in order to perform repairs to the Jefferson Street Bridge. The first closure will take place beginning at 7PM this Friday, September 22 and ending at 5AM Monday, September 25.

The first series of closures will involve I-40 Eastbound from Interstate 440 to the I-65 north interchange. The second series of closures will involve Interstate 40 Westbound from the I-40/I-65 interchange to the I-40/I-440 interchange.

“This structure is nearly 40 years old and has not had any major repairs in several years,” said Regional Director Winston Gaffron. “Although we regret the inconvenience these closures will cause the motoring public, they will shave months off the time needed to complete the work. We are also scheduling the work around events that will bring a high volume of traffic to area interstates.”

During the eastbound and westbound closures, motorists will be detoured to Interstate 440. Electronic message boards will be in place throughout the city to alert motorists of the detours. Please see the enclosed maps for a detailed view of the detours.

The I-40 bridge over Jefferson Street serves approximately 85,500 vehicles a day.
