Lottery-Funded After-school Programs Increase

Tuesday, February 14, 2006 | 06:00pm

Nashville , TN- Governor Phil Bredesen announced today the addition of 10 after-school programs to the growing list of high-quality enrichment opportunities funded with excess lottery dollars. Tennessee ’s Lottery Education After-school Program (LEAP) has provided nearly $6.7 million for 88 new after-school programs for at-risk students across the state.

“Nearly one fourth of Tennessee ’s K-12 students care for themselves after school every day,” said Governor Bredesen. “Offering children learning opportunities after school goes one step further in enhancing their safety and well-being, now and in the future.”

Local school systems and community organizations may apply for the competitive awards. To be eligible, the proposed after-school program must:

•  Serve students an average of 15 hours per week
•  Develop or enhance reading and math or science skills
•  Promote computer literacy and skill development
•  Provide academic mentoring or tutorial assistance
•  Include athletic or leisure opportunities

As educators, our mission is to fulfill the promise of a quality education for all children,” Education Commissioner Lana Seivers said. “After-school programs are another tool to help prepare Tennessee ’s children for a bright future.”
