NASHVILLE – Tennessee’s unemployment rate remained near historic low levels in August, despite a slight increase, according to the latest statistics released today by Gov. Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips. The preliminary, seasonally adjusted statewide unemployment rate for August was 3.6 percent, just 0.1 of a percentage point higher than it was in July. Prior to August, Tennessee’s unemployment rate remained at 3.5 percent for three consecutive months.

Three Blackhawk helicopters from the Tennessee National Guard’s 1-230th Assault Helicopter Battalion arrived in North Carolina late yesterday to assist in the relief effort of Hurricane Florence. All three aircraft are equipped to conduct medical evacuation with rescue hoist capability, as well as transport medical patients, and supplies to those in remote areas.

More than 100 personnel of the 117th Military Police Battalion departed Athens, Tenn. this morning with the necessary equipment and supplies to operate for approximately two weeks.

JONESBOROUGH - The Special Investigations Section of the Tennessee Department of Revenue conducted the investigation that led to the indictment and arrest of Mark Jason Byrd, former owner of Byrd’s Specialty Firearms, for tax evasion, falsification of a tax return, and theft. Byrd, 44, surrendered to Department of Revenue Special Agents at the Washington County Detention Center on Friday. Bond was set at $10,000.
