Dr. Nettles Appointed Chair Of DIDD Statewide Planning And Policy Council

DIDD is very pleased that Dr. Arie Nettles has accepted Governor Haslam’s appointment as chair of the DIDD Statewide Planning and Policy Council (SPPC) effective January 4, 2018 through December 31, 2019. Dr. Nettles has served as an SPPC member as advocate for children since 2014. Her historical expertise, her knowledge of the challenges and opportunities that face our service-delivery system, and her commitment to the representation of cultural diversity will serve the council, the department, service providers, and Tennesseans with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families well.

Arie L. Nettles is Associate Professor of clinical pediatrics and psychologist for school age children to young adults with developmental disabilities and autism in for the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Division of Developmental Medicine. Founding director, Nettles leads the Office of Inclusion and Health Equity (OIHE), a unique effort between the Department of Pediatrics and the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital. This flagship diversity program designed to educate and train workforce on cultural awareness and elimination of healthcare disparities is now expanded to the Vanderbilt University Hospital (adult and medical enterprise). Nettles held joint appointments at the University of Michigan School of Education and School of Medicine as assistant professor/assistant research scientist and clinical assistant professor respectively. As an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Department of Educational Psychology and Counseling, Nettles taught psychological assessment and chaired the first American Psychological Association accreditation committee for the school psychology. Other faculty appointments include Tennessee State University, Fisk University, Trenton State College and Salzburg Austria Global Faculty Fellow on health and education. Nettles is a licensed psychologist in Tennessee and Michigan; nationally certified school psychologist; and nationally registered health service provider. She is Cook Ross certified trainer on unconscious bias and an alumnus of the Disparities Leadership Program Massachusetts General Hospital Harvard University. Nettles is an American Psychological Association Minority Fellow. Awards include 2014 Tennessee Hospital Association Diversity Champion and 5-Star Excellence Award for Provider Services. She studies inequities in educational testing and assessment now expanded to the impact of education and training in healthcare and elimination of health disparities.
