NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) will join forces with the Rives Volunteer Fire Department (Obion County) to install free smoke alarms in homes throughout the entire city of Rives on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

Working in conjunction with local volunteers, organizers plan to reach all 120 homes within the Rives city limits during the unprecedented one-day canvass. The door-to-door event is part of the SFMO’s “Get Alarmed, Tennessee!” program which aims to prevent fire deaths in Tennessee through the provision of smoke alarms and fire prevention education.

“While the State Fire Marshal’s Office has conducted many smoke alarm canvasses statewide, we have never attempted to canvass an entire town in one day with free smoke alarm installations, “ said State Fire Marshal and Commerce & Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak.  “We are excited to partner with the Rives Volunteer Fire Department on this important safety event.”

Since the “Get Alarmed” program’s inception in 2012, the SFMO has distributed over 146,000 smoke alarms statewide to over 500 partnering organizations and recently celebrated the 180th documented save from an installed "Get Alarmed!" smoke alarm.
