NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) hosts the 2016 Fire Loss Symposium on Sept. 29-30 at the Williamson County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in Franklin.  The event will attract approximately 60 fire service leaders from across the state, SFMO staff and representatives from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) who will discuss methods of reducing fire loss in Tennessee.

The two-day symposium will provide members of the fire service with ideas, case-study materials and tools for implementing programs in their community to help lessen the loss of life and property from fire.  Photos are available here.

“The symposium bring our fire service leaders together in one room to share experiences and knowledge in order to help save lives,” said Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance Deputy Commissioner Gary West.  “Reducing the state’s fire mortality rate takes all Tennesseans working together with members of the fire service to promote fire safety and prevent tragedies.”

Highlights of the symposium's first day include members of the SFMO’s Education and Outreach Section outlining a community risk reduction analysis while the second day includes breakout sessions that allow participants to review real fatal fire data in order to identify risk factors and steps that could have been taken to mitigate dangers.

Assistant Fire Chief for the City of Surrey, British Columbia Steve Robinson provided the event’s keynote speech.
