SFMO, Volunteers Set Oct. 8 for Cumberland County Smoke Alarm Canvass

NASHVILLE –The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) will join volunteers from the American Red Cross of Northeast Tennessee, the Crossville Fire Department, the Cumberland County Fire Department, and the Fairfield Glade Fire Department to install free smoke alarms in homes on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016 throughout Cumberland County.

Working in conjunction with local residents, organizers hope to reach at least 2,000 homes in Cumberland County during the one-day event, making it potentially the largest smoke-alarm canvass in the program’s history.

The event is part of the SFMO’s “Get Alarmed, Tennessee!” program which aims to prevent fire deaths in Tennessee’s high-risk areas through the provision of smoke alarms and fire prevention education.

“Support from the fire service, safety organizations, government officials, and beyond helps the SFMO reach even more Tennesseans,” said State Fire Marshal and TDCI Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak.  “Our partners are committed to preventing fire loss, and we are grateful for their dedication. We couldn’t do it without them.”

Since the “Get Alarmed” program’s inception in 2012, the SFMO and Tennessee fire service partners have distributed over 122,000 smoke alarms statewide. Smoke alarms installed through the program are credited with saving 147 Tennesseans from fire danger so far and helped lower Tennessee’s fire fatality rate to a new all-time low in 2015.

“The ‘Get Alarmed’ program is huge for residents of Cumberland County, so I’m proud to promote this life-saving initiative,” said State Sen. Paul Bailey (R-Sparta).

“Homes across our district will be safer because of the program so please request a smoke alarm if needed,” said State Rep. Cameron Sexton, (R-Crossville).
