SFMO, Red Cross Join Harriman Officials to Install Free Smoke Alarms Oct. 22

NASHVILLE –The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO), the American Red Cross of East Tennessee, and the Harriman Fire Department will install free smoke alarms in homes throughout Harriman on Saturday, October 22, 2016. The multi-agency effort is part of the SFMO’s “Get Alarmed, Tennessee!” program, created to prevent fire deaths in the Volunteer State through the provision of smoke alarms and fire safety education.

The outreach event was planned in response to two fire fatalities that occurred in the city of Harriman in the last six months: In April, a 63-year-old woman died in an apartment fire where no smoke alarms were present; and in July, a 23- year-old woman died in a cooking fire where unattended cooking was a contributing factor.

On Saturday, volunteers from three agencies will target over 350 homes in the northern Harriman area with smoke alarm installations, while also educating residents on crucial fire safety topics.

Since the “Get Alarmed” program’s inception in 2012, the SFMO and more than 475 Tennessee fire service partners have distributed over 122,000 smoke alarms throughout Tennessee. Smoke alarms distributed through the program are credited with saving 147 Tennesseans from fire danger so far and helped lower Tennessee’s fire fatality rate to a new all-time low in 2015.
