NASHVILLE – Earlier today the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) graduated 12 employees with the Correctional Behavioral Health Certification (CBHC).  The CBHC is a nationally recognized training, conducted by the American Correctional Association (ACA), that teaches correctional staff how to better recognize and supervise individuals suffering from a mental illness. This training empowers staff to not only recognize symptoms of a mental health crisis, but also gives them additional tools to help de-escalate a potentially critical situation.

The training, which took place at the West Tennessee State Penitentiary, consisted of 40-hours of training and a rigorous test.  According to Correctional Officer Oscar Estella, “The training will help us to understand the offenders and be able to help give feedback to our nurses and doctors if we see them going through any mental or behavioral health issues.” Estrella adds, “I have gone through CIT training and receiving my CBHC was another step in the process.”

“It’s never a bad thing to broaden your horizons,” said Jonathan White, Correctional Officer.  “I look forward to using my training and helping the nurses identify any substance use or mental health issues.”

Vicki Freeman, Director of Women’s Services, presented the officers with their certificates. She said this is an international ACA certification.  “Everyone in this class did a great job.  With our officer’s certified it promotes a safer prison and more knowledge dealing with mental health issues.”
