Insurance Producer Licensing Procedure with Exams

Licensing Requirements for Resident Insurance Producers Required to Take Examinations:

An “insurance producer” is a person required to be licensed under the laws of Tennessee to sell, solicit, or negotiate insurance. Licensing of insurance producers is governed by Tennessee Code Annotated §§ 56-6-101 et seq. and Rule Chapter 0780-1-56.

General Requirements

1. The applicant is at least 18 years of age.

2. Proof of Tennessee residency.

3. For applicants applying for a title insurance line of authority, applicants must complete a minimum of 30 hours of a pre-licensing course of study through an approved educational provider. Approved education providers can be found at https://home.pearsonvue.com/tn/insurance.

4. All applicants are required to pass a written examination, unless otherwise exempt.

Application Procedure

2. For a title insurance line of authority, applicants must complete 30 hours of a pre-licensing course of study through an approved pre-licensing educational provider. (Provider will complete pre-licensing certification.)2. Examinations should be scheduled with PearsonVue online at https://home.pearsonvue.com/tn/insurance or by phone at (800) 274-4957.

3. Fingerprint-based background check is required -- see attached instructions. To avoid delays, please complete your fingerprinting at least 2 business days prior to submitting your application for a license.

4. Proof of passage of the required examination is required. PearsonVue will electronically submit your scoresto the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (“Department”).

5. Submit your application and filing fee ($50.00) online at www.nipr.com. YOU MUST WAIT 48 HOURS FROM TAKING THE EXAMINATION TO SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION ELECTRONICALLY. Processing time for paper applications is 15 days from receipt by the Agent Licensing Section.

6. A license will be issued by the Department once proof of passage of the examination is received and all other application requirements are met. All licensed insurance producers should ensure they are properly appointed before acting as an agent of an insurer. To appoint a producer as its agent, the appointing insurer shall file, in a format approved by the Commissioner of the Department, a notice of appointment within 15 days from the date the agency contract is executed or the first insurance application is submitted. Notice of appointments shall be filed at www.nipr.com.

 

Registration for Fingerprinting

Online Registration is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

1. Go to www.identogo.com;

2. Search for services by state and select Tennessee;

3. Select Digital Fingerprinting;

4. Select Schedule a New Appointment;

5. Enter required information: name, agency (Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance); and

6. Choose a type from one of the following options:

a. TN Insurance Producer -ORI # TN920680Z (Transaction Type – IP)

b. TN Public Adjuster – ORI# TN920560Z”

c. TN Navigator/CAC - ORI# TN920783Z” or

d. “Don’t Know Your Service Code”

(1) Agency Name: “Department of Commerce and Insurance.”

(2) Applicant Type will be the type of application that is being submitted- Insurance Producer, Public Adjuster, or Navigator/CAC

* Notification--Fingerprints submitted will be used to check the criminal history records of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
