NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance’s (TDCI) Division of Consumer Affairs and its partners will provide two opportunities for Memphis-area residents to protect their personal information from scam artists and identity thieves this Friday, April 21, 2017 and Saturday, April 22, 2017.

“The Division of Consumer Affairs is committed to helping Tennesseans avoid scams, schemes, and swindles,” TDCI Consumer Protection Director Cynthia Wiel said. “We’re proud to work with the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South and other partnering organizations to provide consumers with resources to protect their personal information.”

On Friday, April 21, the Division of Consumer Affairs will host a consumer education event in Cordova to teach attendees ways to avoid scams. The event will feature door prizes, educational handouts, and informational skits to re-enforce consumer protection messages. Representative Dwayne Thompson (D-Cordova) and Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris (R-Collierville) will be in attendance and will provide remarks to the audience.

On Saturday, April 22, Consumer Affairs will join the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South and other agencies for a free on-the-spot document shredding plus tips and resources on protecting your identity. Tennesseans can bring up to five boxes or bags of documents to be shredded.
