Tuesday, April 12, 2016 | 02:40pm

NASHVILLE – In conjunction with the April 18 deadline to file federal income taxes, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance’s (TDCI) Division of Consumer Affairs is partnering with the IRS Stakeholder Partnerships, Education and Communication Office, the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Tennessee Division of Insurance, and the Tennessee Division of Securities on Friday, April 15 to promote consumer protection.

The “Tax Day Shred Event” offers free document shredding to local residents in advocacy of identity theft prevention. Members of the community can bring personal documents to be shredded on-site by Shred-it at the Bicentennial Mall State Park Plaza (rain or shine). TDCI representatives and partners will hand out free educational materials and answer consumer questions.

“The Division of Consumer Affairs strives to advocate, educate, and protect Tennesseans,” said TDCI Deputy Commissioner Bill Giannini. “To safeguard against financial fraud, identity theft, imposter scams, and other crimes, the Division encourages consumers to securely dispose of outdated documents containing information like social security numbers, bank account numbers, and passwords.”

Documents suggested for shredding include outdated credit card statements, utility bills, investment documents, tax forms, loan documents, medical records, insurance documents, employment documents and more.
