NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance’s (TDCI) Division of Consumer Affairs encourages Chattanooga residents to attend “Secure Your ID Day,” hosted by the Better Business Bureau of Southeast Tennessee & Northwest Georgia on Friday, April 15, and Saturday, April 16, in Chattanooga.

“Secure Your ID Day” is offered in advocacy of identity theft prevention at no charge to local residents. Members of the community can bring up to three boxes or bags of personal documents to be shredded on-site by Shred-it. Residents may also bring up to two PC hard drives to shred for free.

“The Division of Consumer Affairs strives to advocate, educate, and protect Tennesseans,” said TDCI Deputy Commissioner Bill Giannini. “To safeguard against financial fraud, identity theft, imposter scams, and other crimes, the Division encourages consumers to securely dispose of outdated documents containing information like social security numbers, bank account numbers, and passwords.”

Documents suggested for shredding include outdated credit card statements, utility bills, investment documents, tax forms, loan documents, medical records, insurance documents, employment documents and more.
