NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI) Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak will serve in 2017 as President-Elect of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), the nation’s insurance regulatory support organization.

McPeak was recently elected to the post during the NAIC’s Fall National Meeting in Miami, Fla. She has previously served in NAIC leadership roles including Secretary-Treasurer and Vice President.

“Representing the State of Tennessee as an NAIC officer is one of the highlights of my career, and I am thankful for this opportunity,” McPeak said.  “In my role as NAIC President-Elect, I will continue to advocate for responsible regulation of the insurance industry and a commitment to consumer protection while ensuring there is a competitive marketplace for Tennesseans every day.”

The NAIC is the U.S. standard-setting and regulatory support organization created and governed by the chief insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories. Through the NAIC, state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer review, and coordinate regulatory oversight.

An active NAIC participant for nearly 20 years, McPeak has served on the NAIC’s Executive Committee since 2013. McPeak, who was formerly Kentucky’s lead insurance regulator, was appointed as the Department’s Commissioner by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam in 2011. She was reappointed to her post in 2015.

McPeak has more than 20 years of legal and administrative experience in state government and is the first woman to serve as chief insurance regulator in more than one state.

As TDCI Commissioner, McPeak is the chief regulator of the insurance and securities industries in Tennessee as well as the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office, which protects Tennesseans through fire prevention, education, codes enforcement, and law enforcement.

Additionally, TDCI’s Regulatory Boards oversee several hundred thousand Tennesseans in their professions and businesses. TDCI is also directly responsible for the Division of Consumer Affairs, the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy as well as the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy and the Peace Officers Standards Training Commission, among other divisions.

In addition to her work in state government, McPeak is an Executive Committee Member of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and a member of the Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI).

McPeak noted. “As NAIC President-Elect and a member of IAIS and FACI, I want to ensure that Tennesseeans’ concerns and positions are included in the current important national and international dialogues.”

McPeak is a 1994 graduate of the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville where she earned a juris doctor. She earned a bachelor’s degree, with distinction, in marketing from the University of Kentucky in 1990. Her leadership as TDCI Commissioner was recognized by Business Insurance magazine as one of the publication’s 2013 Women to Watch.
