SFMO, Red Cross Join Cheatham Co. Fire Departments to Install Smoke Alarms Oct. 29
NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO), Ashland City Fire Department (FD), Pleasant View FD, Pegram FD, Kingston Springs FD, and the Nashville Area Red Cross will install free smoke alarms in homes throughout Cheatham County on Saturday, October 29, 2016.
Working in conjunction with local residents, organizers hope to reach at least 800 homes during the one-day canvass. The door-to-door event is part of the SFMO’s “Get Alarmed, Tennessee!” program which aims to prevent fire deaths in Tennessee through the provision of smoke alarms and fire prevention education.
“We continue to see great success in helping Tennesseans through collaborative projects with our partners in all parts of the state,” said State Fire Marshal and Commerce & Insurance Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak. “By ensuring that more and more citizens have working smoke alarms, we can help reduce fire fatalities, injuries, and property loss.”
“Get Alarmed” canvassing efforts this past Saturday, October 22, by the SFMO, Red Cross of East Tennessee, and Harriman Fire Department resulted in the installation of 105 smoke alarms throughout homes in the north Harriman area in only a matter of hours.
Since the “Get Alarmed” program’s inception in 2012, the SFMO has distributed over 122,000 smoke alarms statewide to 475 partnering organizations. Smoke alarms installed through the program are credited with saving more than 150 Tennesseans from fire danger so far and helped lower Tennessee’s fire fatality rate to an all-time low in 2015.
