Record-Setting “Get Alarmed, Tennessee!” Canvass Expected in Gibson County

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) and several Gibson County area fire departments (Gibson County Fire, the cities of Trenton, Milan, and Humboldt) are teaming up Saturday, Sept. 19 to visit more than 1,000 homes across Gibson County for our upcoming “Get Alarmed, Tennessee!” smoke-alarm canvass. The Gibson County canvass would be the largest undertaken by the SFMO thus far.

Since its inception in 2012, the SFMO and Tennessee fire service partners have distributed more than 85,000 smoke alarms throughout Tennessee’s high-risk areas. Figures have recently confirmed the 105th person was saved from a smoke alarm installed as part of the program. The installation program along with fire prevention education, fewer fires and other factors helped play a role in reducing Tennessee’s fire mortality rate in 2014.

“Working smoke alarms help save Tennesseans’ lives, homes and property,” said Rep. Curtis Halford, R-Dyer. “I support the ‘Get Alarmed’ program and hope its success in Tennessee inspires other states to follow our lead when it comes to helping make their citizens safer.”

“The ‘Get Alarmed’ program has saved lives and property across Tennessee and the citizens of Gibson County have already benefitted greatly from the program,” said Gibson County Chief Bryan Cathey. “We are grateful to the State Fire Marshal's Office for providing the free smoke alarms and for their participation in the upcoming smoke alarm canvass.”  

Who: The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire departments of Trenton, Milan, and Humboldt.

What: “Get Alarmed Tennessee” smoke-alarm installation event. Volunteers are being asked to dress in neat, but comfortable fashion. “Get Alarmed Volunteer” orange emergency vests will be used for identification purposes. Refreshments will be provided.

When: 8a.m.-Noon p.m. (CDT) Saturday, Sept. 19, 2015.

Where: Volunteers will meet at the Gibson County Fire Training Facility (184 W. Manufacturers Row, Trenton, Tenn. 38382)
