State Fire Marshal’s Office Supports Fire Safety Workshop for Deaf

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is proud to partner with the Jackson Fire Department and the Jackson Area Center for Independent Living (JCIL) to offer a free home fire safety workshop for Tennesseans who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The workshop is from 1p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Aug 15 at the JCIL at 1981 Hollywood Drive in Jackson at the JCIL, which serves Jackson and portions of West Tennessee.

The sound of a smoke alarm can save lives during a fire emergency. For those in the deaf community or who may be hard of hearing, extra steps are necessary to ensure safety during a fire. The workshop offers safety tips to help ensure that the deaf and hard of hearing have the knowledge and tools needed to prepare in case of a home fire emergency.

“The State Fire Marshal’s Office believes all Tennesseans should be prepared in the event of a fire,” said TDCI Deputy Commissioner Gary West. “We’re proud to partner with the Jackson Fire Department and the Jackson Area Center for Independent Living to offer this valuable event.”

The workshop is open to anyone in the greater Jackson area who is deaf or hard of hearing. Other workshops are planned for the deaf and hard of hearing community across Tennessee at later dates.

Free smoke alarms with flashing lights and bed shakers will be available to the first 150 households that pre-register for the event. Space is limited, so registration is required.
