Shred It/Take Back Event Offers Jackson Consumers Identity and Health Protection June 13

JACKSON – Protect your personal information and your family’s health by bringing outdated, private records and out-of-date prescription drugs to the free Shred It/Take Back Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13 at the Jackson Fairgrounds in Jackson, Tenn.

The event is a joint effort between the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance’s (TDCI) Consumer Affairs Division and the Community Anti-Drug Coalition of  Jackson-Madison County.

“Safeguarding our families always starts at home,” said Rep. Jimmy Eldridge, R-Jackson, event organizer. “The Shred It/Take Back event gives Jackson area consumers peace of mind by offering them a safe, efficient way to dispose of old drugs and personal information all without risk.” 

Document shredders will be available at the Fairgrounds where consumers can dispose of personal documents such as tax information and medical records. By shredding personal documents, consumers help prevent identity theft, which is one of the fastest-growing crimes in Tennessee. Identity thieves often search trash cans and garbage bins for private documents, bills, and other papers containing consumers’ personal information. Members of the Jackson-Madison County Metro Narcotics Unit will also attend the event and collect old prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicine that consumers want to throw away without risk. Properly disposing of old drugs reduces your risk of your home being targeted for a drug-related theft and reduces the risk that children or visitors might accidentally fall ill from taking medicine.  

Consumers should collect their old drugs in a garbage bag, box, or other container and bring them to the Fairgrounds where Metro Narcotics Unit officers will weigh the drugs and dispose of them through incineration.
