NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is proud to partner with local outreach agencies in Johnson City and Knoxville to offer free home fire safety workshops for Tennesseans with hearing loss.

The SFMO will partner with the Communications Center for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and the Johnson City Fire Department to host a workshop in Johnson City this Friday. A Knoxville workshop will be held the following day in partnership with the Knoxville Center for the Deaf and the Knoxville Fire Department.

“The sound of a smoke alarm can save lives should a fire occur,” said TDCI Deputy Commissioner Gary West. “For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, however, extra steps are necessary to ensure safety. We’re proud to partner with these fire departments and regional assistance centers to provide Tennesseans with hearing loss the knowledge and tools needed in case of a home fire emergency.”

The workshops are open to all Tennesseans in the greater regional areas who are deaf or hard of hearing. Free smoke alarms with flashing lights and bed shakers will be available to the first households that pre-register. Space is limited, so registration is required by using the following contact information:
