Managing General Agents Information

Managing General Agents

This is to advise that Tennessee does not issue a special license to Managing General Agents. T.C.A § 56-6-501 – 56-6-510 (Managing General Agents Act) - No person shall act in the capacity of an MGA for an insurer licensed in this state, unless such person is a licensed insurance agent in this state. Each and every individual who engages in the business of selling, soliciting, or negotiating insurance in Tennessee must be licensed and appointed with the insurers represented.

Effective January 1, 2003, business entities may be licensed. The business entity license is not mandatory but optional. Nonresident agencies may write insurance in Tennessee, provided the individuals hold a nonresident license as stated above.

Licensing procedures and forms for producers, business entities, and other insurance licenses may be found on the department’s website at www.tn.gov/commerce.
