Firefighting Personnel Standards and Education Commission
*All certifications are dual accredited through IFSAC and ProBoard, except Airport Firefighter which is IFSAC only.

0360-04-01.-01 (3An applicant shall be at least eighteen (18) years of age in order to take a certification examination and shall have completed the prerequisite training course at the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy (TFACA), or be connected to a fire department in Tennessee, or be a resident of Tennessee.

‌Hazardous Materials Awareness

NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Standard for Responders, 2022 Edition, Chapter 5

  • Applicants must have the following on file in Acadis prior to testing:
    • Proof of a complete Commission approved Hazardous Materials Awareness course.
  • Applicant must complete (1) random hands-on practical as prescribed by the Commission at a Commission test event.
  • The written test for Hazardous Materials Awareness shall consist of 50 questions.
  • The practicals for Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, Fire Fighter I, and Fire Fighter II may be taken on the same day or taken separately

  • Applicant must complete (3) random hands-on practical as prescribed by the Commission at a Commission test event.
  • The written test for Hazardous Materials Operations shall consist of 100 questions.
  • The practicals for Hazardous Materials Operations, Fire Fighter I, and Fire Fighter II may be taken on the same day or taken separately
  • The Hazardous Materials Operations written test may be taken at the same time as the Hazardous Materials Awareness test or separately. If taken together, the Operations test will only be graded if the applicant passes the Awareness test. If the applicant does not pass the Awareness level, the Operations test will not be graded and will be discarded.

Hazardous Materials Technician

    • Initial Training (16 hour) and Basic Training (64 hour) either through TFACA or completed Commission approved equivalent training

    • A completed Commission-approved Live Fire Verification Sheet
    • Proof of completed 2-hour Domestic Violence course completed within the last 3 years
    • NIMS IS-700 and ICS-100 certifications
  • Applicant must complete (4) random hands-on practical as prescribed by the Commission at a Commission test event.
  • The written test for Fire Fighter I shall consist of 100 questions.
  • The practical for Fire Fighter I & Fire Fighter II may be taken on the same day or taken separately.

Fire Department Instructor I

  • Firefighter II Certification is the required prerequisites for this certification.
  • All prerequisites required for prior or foundational disciplines must also be met before pursuing this certification.
  • A candidate must be in the fire service for three (3) years before being eligible to attempt this level of certification.
