State Route 46 Widening

Hickman & Dickson County

Overview

Plans to widen State Route 46, from near SR-100 in Hickman County to near Abiff Road in Dickson County consists of widening the existing two-lane roadway to a five-lane facility.

Purpose and Need

State Route 46 is an important commuter route connecting Columbia and Dickson. The proposed road widening project was initiated as a result of the IMPROVE Act (Improving Manufacturing, Public Roads and Opportunities for a Vibrant Economy Act).

The extra lane and additional right turn lanes will increase safety by providing increased capacity for current and future traffic demand.

The improvements will also reduce delay and congestion on the critical route and give drivers and residents in the area a more efficient, reliable facility.

Design

The existing route was divided into two segments:

  • Segment 1: From near Abiff Road to near Turkey Creek Road
  • Segment 2: Near SR-100 in Hickman County to Near Abiff Road in Dickson County

SR 46 will be widened from a two-lane to a five-lane road, consisting of two travel lanes in each direction, a twelve-foot continuous turning lane, a ten-foot paved outside shoulder, and dedicated right turn lanes within existing and proposed Right of Way.
