State Route 46 Widening
Hickman & Dickson County
Plans to widen State Route (SR) 46, from near SR 100 in Hickman County to near Abiff Road in Dickson County consists of widening the existing two-lane roadway to a five-lane facility.
SR 46 is an important commuter route connecting Columbia and Dickson. The extra lane and additional right turn lanes will increase safety by providing increased capacity for current and future traffic demand. The improvements will also reduce delay and congestion on the critical route and give drivers and residents in the area a more efficient, reliable facility.
Current Status: Right-of-way (ROW) acquisition is forecasted to begin on the first segment in the Summer of 2023. Preliminary engineering for both segments are underway.

History and Background
The proposed road widening project was initiated as a result of the IMPROVE Act (Improving Manufacturing, Public Roads and Opportunities for a Vibrant Economy Act).
The existing typical sections shown are broken into 2 sections, north of I-40 and south of I-40. The existing road south of I-40 consists of one 11 foot lane in each direction with 4 foot shoulders. The existing road north of I-40 consists of one 11 foot lane in each direction and one 11 foot dual left turn lane with 4 foot shoulders.
The proposed typical sections shown below are broken into 3 sections, a rural section (no curb and gutter) south of I-40, an urban section (with curb and gutter) from approximately a quarter of a mile south of I-40 and an urban section (with curb and gutter) north of I-40.
The rural section consists of two 12 foot lanes in each direction with a 12 foot dual left turn lane and 12 foot shoulders (10 feet paved), the urban section south of I-40 will have two 12 foot lanes in each direction with a 12 foot dual left turn lane with no shoulders adjacent to the curb and gutter, this section will transition just south of the new I-40 bridge to a three lane section with one 12' lane in each direction and a 12 foot dual left turn lane with 6 foot shoulders with curb and gutter, this section will extend across the new I-40 bridge and continue to the end of the project.

A Public Design Meeting was held on Thursday, November 3, 2022, at East Hickman High School from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. The purpose of the meeting was to provide the public with an update on the project and to receive comments on the proposed design.
