Transportation projects are developed in four phases: Planning and Environmental, Design, Right-of-Way (ROW), and Construction. The following is a reflection of various aspects of the project phases as they have occurred or will occur for the SR 109 proposed improvements.

In addition to the completed and proposed widening projects, a new interchange is currently under construction in Sumner and Robertson Counties, which will connect I-65 with a new alignment of SR 109, and a new bypass is under development, which will be constructed to the west of the city of Portland.
