Interstate 65 Buckner Road Interchange

History and Background

The proposed interchange is located in the City of Spring Hill. Currently, three interchanges are within five miles of the proposed location including Saturn Parkway (SR 396), I-840, and Goose Creek Bypass. These interchanges accommodate commuter traffic between Maury, Williamson, and Davidson Counties, but they are reaching capacity, which is limiting development in the area.

The request for this interchange was submitted by Williamson County and the City of Spring Hill in coordination with TDOT and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

The I-65 Interchange at Buckner Road will be as a diverging diamond interchange (DDI). Buckner Road will be extended, from Buckner Lane to Lewisburg Pike, to connect with the new interchange.

The interchange will provide three lanes in each direction on the Buckner Road extension. Ramps from Buckner Road to I-65 will diverge from the through lanes, while ramps from I-65 to Buckner Road will merge with the through lanes. Two signalized intersections will be installed at either end of the overpass to control through traffic movements.

I-65 will remain in its current configuration with four 12-foot travel lanes (two lanes in each direction), 4-foot inside shoulders, and 10-foot outside shoulders.

The Buckner Road extension will consist of four 12-foot travel lanes (two in each direction) with either a median or two-way left turn lane depending on location. For approximately 300 feet east and west of the proposed interchange ramps with I-65, Buckner Road will be three lanes in each direction.

The extension will intersect with Buckner Lane to the west and Lewisburg Pike to the east. Both intersections will be signalized with additional travel lanes and turn lanes to accommodate traffic.

Additional improvements to connectors roads, including the existing intersection at Buckner Road and Buckner Lane, are planned by the City of Spring Hill.

On Monday, January 4, 2021, TDOT officially awarded the contract for the I-65 Interchange at Buckner Road to Bell & Associates Construction, LLC at a cost of $54,258,650. This project will be completed using the Design-Build alernative delivery mechanism, an alternative to the traditional Design-Bid-Build project delivery method. Design-Build combines various portions of the design and construction phases into a single contract, whereas Design-Bid-Build separates design and construction into separate contracts and separate work. Design-Build can provide a more unified flow of work from conception to completion by allowing the contractor to use innovative solutions that improve project delivery time, reduce project costs, and reduce impacts to drivers.

Key Project Milestones

To expedite project delivery, the I-65 Interchange at Buckner Road project will be completed under a Design-Build (DB) contract. The Design-Build project delivery method combines all or some portions of the design and construction phases of a project - including design, regulatory permit approvals, utility relocation, and construction – into a single contract.
