State Route 93 – Fall Branch

Washington/Sullivan Counties

Overview

This portion of TDOT Contract V914 is along State Route 93 in the Fall Branch area of Washington and Sullivan counties.  This project is one of several spot improvements planned for the existing two-lane highway between Interstate 81 and the City of Kingsport.  This is the second improvement currently under construction and is located between Morgan Lane and Baileyton Road (Horton Highway).

Purpose & Need

As with the previously completed improvements at Fall Branch on State Route 93, safety is the purpose for the planned modifications and the roadway realignment.  Currently this section of roadway has only 10-foot wide lanes, no shoulders along edge of lanes, and is directly adjacent to steep rocky terrain at the Washington/Sullivan County line.

Proposed Design

The proposed improvements for this section of State Route 93 will include the construction of the new roadway alignment to be constructed on the east side of the existing location.  The new roadway will be constructed with 12-foot lanes, 6-foot shoulders with 4 feet of that area paved with asphalt, and new guardrail throughout the project site.  New drainage structures will also be installed along with two separate retaining wall structures.
