State Route 115 (US 129) Alcoa Highway Hall Road to Tyson Boulevard Interchange

Blount County

Transportation projects are developed in three phases: Preliminary Engineering, Right-of-Way and Construction. Due to the significant size of the State Route 115 (US 129/Alcoa Highway) project, the proposed improvements have been separated into seven smaller sections or phases. The section between State Route 35 (Hall Road) and the proposed Tyson Boulevard Interchange is currently under construction.

Project Update

Monday, September 9th – Friday, September 20th

The Contractor is continuing grading operations along the Western side of Alcoa Highway. This excavation is in preparation for constructing the new alignment of West Hunt Road. Grading operations in this area also include the new entry and exit ramps (Ramps C & D) for Southbound Alcoa Highway. The Contractor is also performing grading operations for the new Hunt Road/Flagship Intersection, Tyson Boulevard/Flagship Intersection and the new Tyson Centre entrance. Construction of a small retaining wall adjacent to the west end of the Hunt Road Bridge will also begin next week.  They will also continue to install water line along Hunt Road. The utility work along West Hunt Road will require a flagging operation, which will result in some temporary lane closures. These closures will be in non-commute hours (from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM). As part of this closure, Whitney Street will be closed intermittently.

They will also continue installation of AT&T conduit along Northbound Alcoa Highway. Electric utilities will continue to be installed, including underground conduit along Flagship Drive and new power
poles on the East side of Alcoa Hghway.  The Contractor will also continue installation of a new sewer line in the Waste area.

Special Lane Closures

1.      Monday, September 16th, starting at 9:30AM, the Contractor is scheduled to pull electric lines across Hunt Road approximately 500 feet east of the Hunt Road Bridge.  They have 4 wires to pull across the road.  They will hand pull a single wire across Hunt Road, secure it to the bucket trucks, lift the wire and secure it to the steel poles.  When the wires are secure they will open Hunt Road to clear traffic.  Once traffic has cleared, they will then repeat the procedure. They are estimating 3 to 5 minutes to perform the work with a maximum delay of 7 minutes.  If any problems arise they will remove the wires from Hunt Road and release traffic.

2.      The Contractor is scheduled to repair a pothole on the southbound lane of SR 115 under the Hunt Road Bridge overpass.  They anticipate this work being performed on Tuesday, September 17th, but it could push to Wednesday or Thursday depending on the availability of materials. The Contractor will perform a rolling road block on the south bound lanes of Alcoa Highway between 9:00AM and 11:00AM to perform this work.

Note: The Waste Site for this project will be located north of East Hunt Rd on the old sod farm (Tract 80). The soil that is hauled to this area will be utilized on the upcoming sections of the Alcoa Highway Bypass in Blount County.
