Timeline

Transportation projects are developed in four phases: Planning and Environmental, Design, Right-of-Way (ROW), and Construction. The I-26 / Boones Creek Road interchange (Exit 17) modifications are currently in the Construction phase.

Motorists should be aware of changing traffic conditions throughout the lifespan of the project. In an effort to minimize the impact to motorists, the project will be constructed in five different traffic control phases. During the final phase, prior to project completion, the interchange will be CLOSED for one weekend. Specific dates and times for the closure will be provided once scheduled by the contractor.  

 

Project Updates:

May 5, 2021

This project is substantially complete and fully open to traffic. The project is now in the final Phase 4 traffic control, which is the diversion diamond pattern. However, it is currently reduced to a one lane configuration. Remaining activities include: Final texture coating of parapet wall 7, which divides traffic flow on SR 354 in the diversion diamond. Final timing and phasing for new signals along with some minor signal head modification. Complete and modify any remaining ground mounted signs. Complete final surface pavement markings, which may include revised contrast tape or thermo on concrete ramps. Complete any remaining concrete flatwork not accessible until Phase 4 traffic control. Remove all remaining traffic control devices from the site and perform final cleanup substantially complete and is fully operational to traffic.

 March 11, 2021

Concrete paving on Ramp A and Ramp CC is complete. Traffic remains in Phase 3 traffic control. However, several modifications are taking place prior to Phase 4, the final DDI pattern. Crews are building and erecting overhead sign structures. Complete connections for new signals as all have been installed. Ramps D and C are complete with exception of tie-in area at SR 354 which can take place during next Phase 3 traffic control modification.  Switch traffic control to complete Phase 4 work, which will include final asphalt surface and pavement markings. Complete curb/gutter for islands along with any remaining concrete flatwork not accessible until Phase 4 traffic control. Temporary ramp closures for overhead sign placement. Parapet Wall 7 to be completed in final traffic phase.

February 9, 2021

Complete concrete paving on Ramp AA and switch traffic to the AA side. Place permeable base and final concrete paving on Ramp A. Traffic remains in Phase 3 traffic control, however, several modifications will occur prior to Phase 4. Ramp CC construction across box culvert and tie-in to SR 354. New signal and overhead sign construction continues along with pole and foundation installs. Ramps D and C are complete with exception of tie-in area at SR 354. SR 354 asphalt paving up to surface mix for next traffic control phase. Wall 5 construction is nearly complete and work continues this area, along with parapet wall modifications.  Temporary ramp closures for overhead sign placement. Additional sewer line install for City of Johnson City.

December 7, 2020

Ramp A and AA is being graded and com-pleting the final concrete paving. Traffic has been switched on to the new Ramp B/BB for underground utility work. Ramp B/BB/SR 354 tie-in is complete and traffic has switched to new phase this area. Traffic on north end of project remains in Phase 3 traffic control for Ramp C/CC work. Box bridge extension at Stream 1 is com-plete and Ramp CC construction has began. New signal and overhead sign construction foundations along with pole installs.  Ramps D and C are nearly complete with exception of tie-in area at SR 354. Wall 5 construction is nearly complete and work continues this area. Water, storm drain and sewer line work nearing completion for next traffic phase.

November 10, 2020

Walls 1, 2, 3, 4, 4A and 6 are complete. and construction of Wall 5 has resumed. Ramp BB is ready to be paved and Ramp B/BB/SR 354 tie in is ready to be paved and traffic switched. Traffic on the north end of project is in Phase 3 of traffic control. The box bridge extension on Stream 1 is nearly complete.  SR 354 between Lake Park Drive and Christian Church Road is complete with the exception of final surface and striping. Ramps C and D have been paved. New sections of Ramp B have been paved. Realignment work on Lake Park Drive is complete. Water and sewer line work nearing completion. Traffic has been switched onto the new Ramp B.

October 7, 2020

Walls 1, 2, 3, 4, 4A and 6 are complete. Wall 5 construction has resumed. Traffic on the North end of the project is in Phase 3 of traffic control. Box bridge extension on Stream 1 is nearly complete. SR 354 between Lake Park Drive and Christian Church Road is complete with the exception of final surface and striping. Ramps D and C have been paved. Lake Park Drive realignment work is complete. Water and sewer line work is nearing completion.  Traffic has been shifted onto the new Ramp D. 

September 10, 2020

Walls 1, 2, 3, 4, 4A and 6 are complete. Wall 5 construction will begin when utility work is complete. Traffic on the North end of the project is in Phase 3 of traffic control. Box bridge extension on Stream 1 is nearly complete. SR 354 between Lake Park Drive and Christian Church Road is complete with the exception of final surface and striping. Ramp D and DD construction is nearly complete. New sections of Ramp B have been paved. Lake Park Drive realignment work is complete. Ramp C runaround is constructed and the new ramp is ready to be constructed. Water and sewer line work is nearing completion.
