I-24 Accelerated Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation Project Weekend Closure Dates

Tuesday, August 29, 2017 | 9:23am

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews will temporarily close a portion of I-24 on the downtown interstate loop for a bridge replacement and rehabilitation project for four weekends starting at the end of September. The tentative closure schedule is as follows.

  • Friday, September 29 at 8 p.m. through Monday, October 2 at 6 a.m.
  • Friday, October 6 at 8 p.m. through Monday, October 9 at 6 a.m.
  • Friday, October 20 at 8 p.m. through Monday, October 23 at 6 a.m.
  • Friday, October 27 at 8 p.m. through Monday, October 30 at 6 a.m.

Since the work is weather dependent, a news release will be distributed the Wednesday before each weekend closure once the work schedule has been confirmed.

The work will require a complete closure of I-24 from the I-40 split east of downtown Nashville to the I-65 split north of downtown Nashville. Traffic will be diverted onto I-65 and I-40. During the closures, crews will be working at multiple locations along the corridor.

The $28.5 million project will replace the I-24 bridges that cross over Oldham Street and Spring Street on the eastern loop of downtown and include deck repairs to the Silliman Evans Bridge, as well as drainage work at the Shelby Avenue exit. The entire area will be resurfaced as part of the project.

The bridges will be replaced using Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods, which speed up construction and repair of highways and bridges by allowing short-term, total road or bridge closures to allow crews the space to do their jobs and the ability to work around the clock. This dramatically reduces the time to complete a project and the long-term inconvenience to motorists.

TDOT has orchestrated several successful ABC projects on downtown Nashville interstates, including the Fast Fix 8 project in 2015 which replaced eight bridges on I-40, and the 2012 replacement of the I-24 bridges over Woodland Street and Main Street in East Nashville which required the same interstate closure configuration on I-24 as the current project.

In 2016, the Tennessee Department of Transportation lost three workers in the line of duty. All three were struck by passing motorists. Those tragedies bring the total number of TDOT lives lost to 112. We don’t want to lose another member of our TDOT family. We’re asking you to WORK WITH US.
