State-Level Winners Advance to National Competition

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division recently announced the state-level winners of the 2016 U.S. International Aviation Art Contest. Winners were presented their awards at a ceremony held on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Lebanon Municipal Airport. The ceremony was open to winners’ families, friends and teachers.

This year, more than 350 entries were submitted by parents and teachers on behalf of children ages 9 to 17 from across the state. Each entry was judged in three classes, according to age and, at least in part, for its creative use of the theme in relation to the aviation world.

State winners placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd received a monetary prize up to $100, with a matching gift for the associated school art department. Winners at the state level will also compete at the national level, and then on to international competition.

The annual contest, hosted by TDOT Aeronautics Division and The National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO), challenges young people to illustrate the importance of aviation through art. It also provides an interactive, fun medium to motivate youth of all ages to become more familiar with aeronautics, engineering and science.

Results from the 2016 contest can be found online at www.tn.gov/tdot/article/aviation-art-contest-results.
