LEBANON, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer joined state and local officials today to celebrate the opening of the Lebanon Town Square located at the intersection of US 231 (Cumberland Street) and US 70 (Main Street) in Wilson County.

Tuesday’s ribbon cutting marked the end of a project which began in October 2014. Reconstruction of the square to a traditional roundabout was the result of a safety study, requested by local officials. An aggressive design schedule allowed the much-anticipated project to be let to construction in July 2014, with construction completed in less than year.

The $1 million reconstruction project included removing parking spaces surrounding the statue of General Robert Hatton in the center of the square and adding parking at each corner of the square.  Specialty signing and pavement markings were also added. Enhanced lighting, landscaping, and drainage improvements were also part of the project, which was funded with state and local dollars.

Reconstruction of the square is designed to improve safety, create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, and revitalize the city square.

Rep. Mark Pody (R-Lebanon) and Rep. Susan Lynn (R-Mt Juliet) represent Wilson County in the Tennessee General Assembly and were on hand for the ribbon cutting. Local leaders, including Lebanon Mayor Philip Craighead and various council members, were also in attendance. The event was held at the Lebanon Wilson County Chamber of Commerce and hosted by the City of Lebanon.
