Meet the Read to be Ready Coaching Network Team

Becky Cox

Becky Cox
Executive Director of Reading
As the Executive Director of Reading with the Tennessee Department of Education, Becky leads the coordination and alignment of literacy initiatives, including the Read to be Ready Coaching Network.  Prior to joining the Tennessee Department of Education, Becky served for almost two decades in a variety of roles as an elementary and middle school classroom teacher, reading interventionist, district reading specialist, district instructional coach, and state professional developer.

Elizabeth Norton

Dr. Elizabeth Norton 
Director of Reading Coaching

Dr. Norton is the director of reading coaching for the Tennessee Department of Education. She earned her PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Tennessee in 2015. She also holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Tennessee Technological University. In addition to these degrees, Dr. Norton also has a reading specialist endorsement. Prior to serving in her role as a leader of the Read to be Ready Coaching Network, Dr. Norton served Knox County Schools as an executive master teacher, master teacher, literacy coach, and reading interventionist. She has also supported the literacy community as a former president and board member of the Smoky Mountain Reading Council.

Melanie Kosko

Assistant Director of Reading Coaching 

Melanie is the assistant director of reading coaching for the Tennessee Department of Education.  She has served in education for nearly 20 years. Prior to working with the department, she supported early literacy coaches across East Tennessee as a Read to be Ready reading coach consultant. Throughout her career, she has served in a variety of roles including elementary classroom teacher, lead teacher evaluator, district instructional coach, professional development leader, and summer school principal. 

Amanda Newberry

Amanda Newberry

Southeast Region
As a reading coach consultant, Amanda provides ongoing support to literacy coaches in order to impact change for teachers and students through enhanced reading instruction in grades K-3. Prior to this role, Amanda served for 12 years in the Florida and Tennessee public education systems as an elementary classroom teacher, reading coach, and peer evaluator.

Kelley Key

Kelley Key
Ready Reading Coach Consultant
Southeast Region
As a reading  coach consultant, Kelley provides ongoing support to literacy coaches in order to impact change for teachers and students through improved reading instruction in grades K-3. Prior to this role, Kelley served for 24 years in Tennessee public education as an elementary classroom teacher, Title 1 reading teacher, and Teacher Advancement Program (TAP) master teacher.

Kate Hall

First Region 
As a Read to be Ready reading coach consultant, Kate provides training and support to literacy coaches in the Read to be Ready Coaching Network. Prior to working with the Tennessee Department of Education, Kate has served for nearly a decade in a variety of roles as an elementary classroom teacher, district literacy teacher leader, and as a Core coach for the state of Tennessee.

As a Read to be Ready reading coach consultant, Laura provides training and support to literacy coaches in the Read to be Ready Coaching Network. Prior to working with the Tennessee Department of Education, Laura has served for almost two decades in a variety of roles as an elementary classroom teacher, district instructional coach, reading interventionist, and school-based instructional coach.

Kim Andersen

As a reading coach consultant in the Read to be Ready Network, Kim works with literacy coaches to support the alignment of reading initiatives.  Prior to working with the Tennessee Department of Education, Kim served for almost two decades in a variety of roles as an elementary classroom teacher, reading coach, national reading coach, district instructional coach, and professional developer for hundreds of schools across the U.S. Kim has a genuine love of reading and has worked her entire professional career to instill this excitement and love of reading in everyone she meets.

Melisha Simmons

As a reading coach consultant with the Tennessee Department of Education, Melisha Simmons partners with districts and reading coaches across the state to strengthen and improve literacy initiatives. Prior to working with the Tennessee Department of Education, Melisha served as a classroom teacher, core coach, and regional content consultant for the state of Tennessee.

Cowinta Key

Southwest Region

As a Read to be Ready reading coach consultant, Cowinta provides training and support to literacy coaches in the Read to be Ready Coaching Network.  Prior to supporting Read to be Ready coaches in 2016 with texts, questions, tasks, and professional development, she retired from Memphis City Schools after working in the education field for more than 35 years. She has served as a principal, assistant principal, and teacher.  

Toyree Jones

As a reading coach consultant in the Read to Be Ready Coaching Network, Toyree is committed to providing collaborative support to develop independent, lifelong readers, and thinkers in early literacy.  Prior to working with the Tennessee Department of Education, Toyree served for almost two decades in a variety of roles as an elementary and middle school classroom teacher, instructional facilitator, professional learning community coach, and instructional literacy curriculum coach for iZone Schools in Shelby County Schools.

Ashley Kelley

Northwest Region
As a reading coach consultant, Ashley is focused on bringing the most effective literacy instruction to the students of Tennessee. She facilitates training, models best practices, and collaborates with districts.  Ashley has been an educator for ten years. Beginning her career as kindergarten teacher at Dyersburg Primary School, Ashley then married and moved to Decaturville, TN. While in Decatur County, Ashley served as a first grade teacher, and most recently the curriculum and data coach.  In addition, Ashley spent several summers leading early literacy trainings for the Tennessee Department of Education.

Ruth Lindsey

As a reading coach consultant with the Tennessee Department of Education, Ruth provides professional development and support to K-3 Literacy Coaches in the Read to Be Ready Coaching Network. Prior to working as a reading coach consultant, Ruth served as a classroom teacher, professional development specialist, portfolio peer reviewer, regional content coach, and literacy coach within Knox County Schools.

Kim Daugherty

As a Read to be Ready reading coach consultant, Kim works directly with district coaches to support Read to Be Ready initiatives. She collaborates and plans with coaches to implement research-based reading strategies that support quality Tier I instruction. Prior to working with the Tennessee Department of Education, Kim served for almost two decades in a variety of roles, including an early childhood, elementary, and middle school classroom teacher, reading specialist, and district instructional coach.

Melissa A. Johnson

As a Read to be Ready reading coach consultant, Melissa provides training and support to literacy coaches in the Read to be Ready Coaching Network. She has been an educator in Tennessee for 21 years. She served as a classroom teacher, special educator, and coach prior to joining the Read to be Ready team in 2016. 

Erin Phillips

As a reading coach consultant with the Tennessee Department of Education, Erin Phillips supports coaches within the Read to Be Ready Coaching Network. Prior to working with the department, Erin has served as an elementary school teacher and an academic coach with Murfreesboro City Schools.

Abigail McKamey

South Central Region 
As a Read to be Ready reading coach consultant, Abigail provides training and support to literacy coaches in the Read to be Ready Coaching Network. Prior to working with the Tennessee Department of Education, Abigail worked at the Howard Baker Center for Public Policy and then moved to Nashville where she taught at Cole Elementary School.  Following this experience,  helped launch a new charter school, the Nashville Academy of Computer Science. She then worked as a fifth grade math and social studies teacher.  Abigail later moved back to her hometown in Lawrenceburg, TN, to teach at Ingram Sowell Elementary school as a sixth grade English language arts teacher.  She served as the school's instructional coach and worked in this position until her appointment as a district Read to Be Ready coach.  She is currently in the last year of her doctoral program at Lipscomb University.
