Farmers Market Nutrition Programs

The Department of Health receives grants from the United States Department of Agriculture to operate the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP). This program is offered in Tennessee in July and August. The FMNP provides locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs to families with limited resources.

The FMNP improves the eating habits of WIC families and senior citizens. They also receive nutrition information which shows why it is important to eat more fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables can help prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and stroke.

The FMNP only includes fruits, vegetables, and herbs which are grown in Tennessee. This gives support to local farmers and their families. The FMNP farmers sell their produce at local Farmers Markets and at permanent farm stands.

About 25,000 eligible participants are served each summer. Participants must be residents of selected counties in Tennessee and meet gross income guidelines.

A webinar designed to provide information about the Tennessee Farmers Market Nutrition Program will occur on April 12, 2017. After this training, Tennessee farmers may apply to become authorized to provide fresh, unprocessed fruits, vegetables and herbs to WIC participants and low income seniors at local farmers markets in select counties.

Senior Farmers Market Nutritional Program

Senior citizens in Davidson, Dyer and Shelby Counties who get Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) foods also get SFMNP checks. Hamblen and Warren County seniors only get SFMNP checks. The SFMNP uses the same guidelines as CSFP. Seniors must be a resident of the county and 60 years of age or older. They must have an income at or below 130% of the federal income poverty guidelines. The SFMNP gives seven $5 checks to about 15,000 seniors each year.

WIC Farmers Market Nutritional Program

WIC FMNP gives checks to exchange for fruits, vegetables and herbs to women and children who receive WIC services. FMNP checks are for $5 and participants get a total of $20 per year. WIC mothers use the FMNP checks at farmers markets. Every year WIC mothers discover the benefits of buying local produce. The WIC FMNP serves families in  Coffee, Hickman, Lincoln, Madison, Maury, Moore, Rutherford and Sullivan Counties.
