Tobacco is no longer accepted as a social norm; Tennessee teens are educating their peers and influencing younger youth on the dangers of tobacco.

“I don’t Vape because”
Gibson County Special School District provided some informative information regarding Juuling. By presenting the effects of vaping to two middle schools. They also presented the effects of vaping, along with ways and instruments students utilize in order to vape to faculty at Rutherford School. They also equipped all school counselors within the Gibson County Special School District with a juuling PowerPoint presentation.

Lung Cancer Awareness Month and Great American Smokeout Education
On November 15th, the Benton County Health Department partnered with Coordinated School Health and CHS Drug Alliance students to promote Lung Cancer Awareness Month and the Great American Smokeout at Camden Central High School. The purpose of this event was to educate students on the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine use, provide cessation resources, and to encourage those who are currently using tobacco or nicotine to make a plan to quit. Public Health Educator Crystal Floyd provided 578 students with tobacco cessation resources and giveaways during a lunch and learn education session. For the month of November Floyd also partnered with Camden Central High School Health Education Department and Camden Jr. High School Guidance classes in order to provide tobacco and e-cigarette/vaping education to 89 students.

Middle School ENDS Presentation (National Day of Action)
For Taking Down Tobacco: National Day of Action, Makenzie Harden gave a presentation at the Decatur County Middle School about the dangers of ENDS use. She spoke to two groups of 6th graders and share about the negative health effects of using ENDS, how they can affect your performance in sports, and how it is illegal for people their age to use ENDS. The thought of getting popcorn lung from using ENDS shocked the students and teachers. Before the students left the presentation, they signed the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids banner, pledging to be tobacco and nicotine-free.

Parent Presentation at Decatur County Middle School
Makenzie Harden gave a presentation to middle school students and parents who attended the SPIN (Student Parent Involvement Night). She talked about the dangers of vaping, chemicals, the consequences vaping has on our health, and how expensive it is to have an addiction to ENDS. Makenzie spoke specifically to the parents, and vaping products looked like and told them how middle schoolers are hiding their vapes. Makenzie’s information sheets are posted on the school website for easy access for parents. Parents left the presentation feeling informed about vape products and how they can be hidden in plain sight.

The Great American Smoke Out at the University of Tennessee Martin
The Mission of the Healthy Hawks Initiative is to develop a culture of health at the University of Tennessee Martin by implementing strategies that promote healthy behaviors to improve the health of faculty, staff and students. Health promotion activities will continue throughout the year related to the Tennessee Department of Health, Big Four: Tobacco Free, Physical Activity, Healthy Eating and Substance Misuse.

Great American Smoke-Out
The Decatur County PPI team provided information on the dangers of vaping and juuling, the Tennessee Tobacco Quitline number, and giveaways to all students and facility at the UT Martin Parsons Center on November 14, 2019 to observe the Great American Smoke Out.
