How the Program Works

  • Pregnant women eligible to enroll into the program are referred to their local health department.
  • Pregnant women attend four prenatal smoking cessation sessions to receive education and support to quit smoking and stay quit. The local health department uses education, support, carbon monoxide monitoring and incentives (vouchers for diapers and wet wipes) to encourage and support cessation.
  •  At prenatal sessions #3 and #4, women may receive their first two diaper vouchers if they test tobacco-free.
  •  After the birth of the baby, participants return monthly to continue carbon monoxide monitoring and, if smoke free, receive monthly diaper vouchers for up to twelve months.
  • Diaper vouchers are worth $25 and may be redeemed for any brand or size of diapers or baby wipes at Walmart.
  • A smoker who lives with the pregnant woman can also enroll in the program and, if they successfully quit smoking, they earn additional monthly diaper vouchers for the mother.
